Allaitement chez les primipares : choix personnel ou influencé ?

Abstract : Despite information and advertising, breastfeeding is still a daily matter of debate. As part of an evaluation of the policies of breastfeeding assistance improvement, this study aims at adressing the question of the influences in the choice of the feeding way of her newborn child by the mother (family circle influence: husband, maternal grand-mother ; friends influence ; medical care during the pregnancy : medical consultations, birth and parenthood preparing courses). This study allowed us to show that the father has an essential role in the choice. On the other hand, the grandmother's opinion is much less valued; and friends opinion is really little considered. Besides, we found a link between the participation in courses and meetings about breastfeeding and the fact that the mothers breastfed their child. However, we cannot conclude from our results that the patients have been pushed towards breastfeeding their child by the birth and parenthood preparing courses. Patients need to be free and should not see breastfeeding as an absolute obligation, but rather as a choice offered to them. It is a matter of personal and intimate decision made according to the patient's convictions and personal experiences.
