La connaissance de la Hongrie en France face à l'expérience du voyage, entre Lumières et romantisme : savoirs, représentations, perceptions et analyses

Abstract : At the beginning of the 18th century, the Habsburg reconquered the entire old Hungarian territory against the Ottoman Empire, and asserted the foundation of their domination on Hungary until 1848. At the same time, the Kingdom of Hungary was a state defined by a political and social stagnation, and had some specific features in Europe: there was still the feudal system; a lot of different ethnicities were living in the same kingdom with their own culture. For the western European societies, the 18th century is the century of the Enlightenment, of the traveling and of the liking of elsewhere. But, the Kingdom Of Hungary, although placed in Europe, is a little-known state that had a bad image in the French dictionary and encyclopedia. The knowledge concerning Hungary is rough and Hungary is described as an insanitary country populated by savage and barbarian people. There were just a few French travelers in Hungary during the 18th century, but their number increased significantly at the beginning of the 19th century. These travelers experienced the Kingdom of Hungary in a better way than the dictionary and encyclopedia described, even if they saw a big economic and social backwardness. Indeed, the travelers analyzed the state of underdevelopment and the destitution of farmers as a consequence of the feudal system with the Austrian politic. At the opposite of the standardized image of Hungary in France, the travelers considered this kingdom like a sane country, where there are more "noble savage" people without the beneficial effect of the civilization, than true savage.
