Facteurs influençant la toxicomanie en milieu carcéral‎ : étude qualitative chez d'anciens détenus recrutés en Centres de Soins pour Toxicomanes

Abstract : Aim: Even though one prisoner out of three is using psychoactive substances, there are few studies on this population. The aim of this study is to define the factors influencing addiction in a prison environment, thanks to the testimonies of former drug using prisoners. Methods: Qualitative survey via semi-conducted interviews of former substance abusing prisoners recruited in two care centres for drug addicts from Chambéry and its surrounding area. The interviews and the results analysis were conducted by two researchers. Results: 8 former prisoners, who used drugs in prison, recruited in 2 care centres for drug addicts, participated in this study. The overview of these interviews shows that the circulation of illegal substances and psychoactive drugs, coming from either traffic or medical prescription, is significant in prison. Ease of access combined with an environment of solitude, pressure and violence are elements contributing to a feeling of insecurity. The consumption of psychoactive drugs appears in that environment as a way to escape the everyday difficulties. Conversely, elements helping to structure the prisoners' daily routine, creating points of reference and promoting trust seem to limit the consumption of illegal substances, and lead drugs users to treatment. Conclusion: In order to modify addictive behaviours in prison, it is necessary to re-evaluate the conditions of detention and the care of drug users.
