Coûts intermédiaires de la filière banane d'importation en Europe : répartition et évolution

Abstract : This study aims to formalize and analyze the distribution and evolution of intermediate costs on the European import banana value chain in order to objectify the feeling of loss of income expressed by some stake holders in recent years. For that, an index, "European imported banana full cost" created by The Market News Service in 2011, has been revised both on sources of data and methodology. Using the method of value chain analysis, all the banana sector from production to import has been traced in order to identify the different intermediate costs in the formation of the final price. The index was built from intermediate indicators correlated to the main cost stages of the sector and aggregated according their relative weight. The final index has been used to analyze trends of intermediate costs and therefore the full cost, under different hypothesis. It has been shown that the intermediate costs, especially inputs and sea freight, have increased constantly since 2003 with a sharp increase in 2008, following the oil price evolutions. Meanwhile the sale prices have not improved very much, increasing the pressure on the margins of the various stake holders. In particular, the increase of intermediate costs was more pronounced on the sea freight stage than on other stages of the sector. However, producers must face a double pressure, on the one hand from the increase of production costs, and on the other hand from importers.
