Étude qualitative auprès de médecins généralistes de Marseille : vécus et représentations de l'aide au sevrage tabagique

Abstract : Introduction: The fight against smoking is one of the priorities of public health. As primary care physicians, the general practitioners have frequent and individualized contacts with their patients. This should allow them to detect smoking addiction and to support most patients in their efforts to quit smoking. Although they are conscious of the risks incurred by the smokers, the implication of the general practitioners is often insufficient. Method: This contradiction is the object of a qualitative survey. Semi-directive individual interviews have been conducted with general practitioners from Marseille. The "maximal variation" sampling method has been used, with a total of twenty-five interviews included from December 2011 to May 2012. Results: The interviews can be interpreted along two main lines. Smoking is above all a social behavior. Freedom of a lifestyle smoker sometimes takes precedence the medical approach in the relation between a patient smoker and his general practitioner. Moreover some aspects of the care in general practice are not well suited for an optimal assistance in smoking cessation. Conclusion: This qualitative survey demonstrates the interest of a collective reflection on the role of the general practitioner in a domain which concerns the individual's lifestyle. Some ideas are also suggested concerning the type of knowledge and support which could benefit to the general practitioners.
