Influence de l'environnement scolaire de l'enfant sur l'acquisition du vocabulaire et la compréhension de textes

Abstract : We have been engaged in this research to study vocabulary acquisition among children and its links with reading comprehension. More precisely, we have attempted to show that the child's school class has an effect on the richness of his vocabulary. Within the framework of our experimentation, we have compared the vocabulary of children coming from classes of CE2 and CM2 of a same school situated in a "favoured" neighbourhood. For our study, we used two tests of vocabulary : one is a production of definitions, the other is a multiple choice question paper with sixty words in both of them. The hypothesis tested in this study are : (i) an effect of the children's school class and (ii) an effect of the test's type on the pupils' results. The results show that the pupils of CM2 are more successful than the children of CE2 for the two tests. Moreover, the multiple choice question paper is significantly better than the test of production of definitions.
