Étude de la motivation au sevrage tabagique d'une population dans la grande précarité

Abstract : INTRODUCTION: Disadvantaged social groups are more likely to smoke and the negative effects of tobacco on their health are more important. This study aimed to research the motivation to quit smoking among disadvantaged people. METHODS: Adult smokers, attending social support structures in two French tows were asked to answer a questionnaire. The motivation to quit smoking was assessed using a questionnaire called Q-MAT in French and a numerical scale. The constituent factors of motivation were also analysed. RESULTS: The study count 94 subjects. 73,4% where males; 70% where homeless. 50% had a strong dependance to tobacco. According to the "Q-MAT", 13.8% were highly motivated to quit smoking, 17% moderately and 69.2% insufficiently. The numerical scale ranked a third of the subjects in each of the three categories. Other findings: To be a women was associeted with a stronger motivation to stop smoking. Alcohol consumption was associeted with reduced motivation. Stress management was the most cited raison for smoking. CONCLUSION: The "Q-MAT" shows a relatively low motivation to quit. This was most likely due to the necessity for the subjects to project themselves into the future. This is known to be a difficult issue in those populations. The subject population's desire to quit was similar to the general population. The identification of the best solutions to assist these people remains an open question. Cessations programms should probably take into acound stress management and future prospects to be more efficient.
