Les dynamiques d'installation sur les territoires en transition agricole

Abstract : The dominant farming model can't face the different current problematic of sustainability: as an example, the number of new farmer settlements is constantly decreasing. In some regions, alternative farming models have been set up by new generations of farmers, being more attractive for them and also answering contemporary issues. Through three case studies identified as being in a transition towards agriculture sustainability, this survey tries to determine the place and the involvement of the new farmers in the changing of farming model. It appears that the new farmers on a region in transition can play four different roles. Firstly, the farmers settled on familial farms are or "gropers", making limited changes, or "followers" when using innovations coming form the alternative model without changing their paradigm. At the opposite, the new entrants in agriculture play a determinant role: some of them are "motor" in the alternative model diffusion, when others are the "conservators" of the alternative values.v To facilitate a territorial farming transition, it seems relevant to make easier the settlement of the new entrant in agriculture. In this way, a region needs to have alternative farmers networks, alternative farming trainings, a strong and structured social demand for this agriculture, and public policies to support these settlements.
