Étude transversale observationnelle de la balance bénéfice-risque des traitements par benzodiazépines et/ou antidépresseurs auprès de patients interrogés par auto-questionnaires en officine

Abstract : The prescription of benzodiazepines and antidepressants is a public health problem due to chronic use, dependence, withdrawal syndrome and development of sedative effect and memory impairment. For all these reasons, the objective of our study was to assess by self-questionnaires issued in ten pharmacies to patients benzodiazepine and/or antidepressant the risk-benefit balance of these treatments and the information they was made by doctors and pharmacists. Our study show a long-term treatment use: more than 76% were established for more than one year. The results show that more than 50% of patients have memory impairment with these treatments and 39% have experienced daytime sleepiness. The dependence severity scores are higher in BZD and 90% of patients had a withdrawal syndrome upon discontinuation of treatment. However, few patients were informed dependence risk (46% by the doctors and 20% by pharmacist). Sleep disorders and anxiety persist in the majority of patients treated with BZD. These results discuss treatment efficiency, especially in the long term. Withdrawal syndromes explain the reluctance of users and prescribers to discontinue treatment. One way to mitigate these difficulties is informing patients about the potential risks associated molecules and advice. However, our study showed a clear lack of information provided by doctors and pharmacists. Our results show a trivialization prescriptions and dispensing of these drugs which must be absolutely stop by raising awareness of health professionals, from their initial training and information campaigns.
