Modifications et étalonnage d'un test évaluant la numération de position au cycle 3

Abstract : The notion of place-value relates the fact that in Arabic numerals the meaning of a digit depends on its position in the number. The place-value is an important concept in arithmetic and allows to easily compute complex operations with numbers. The child has to master this notion in order to properly manipulate numbers and understand how they are built. The understanding of the place-value concept is the outcome of a long in-school learning process, particularly in the third, fourth and fifth grade. Astonishingly, no test is available to assess this skill. In 2009, a test (involving several sub-tests) was built and pre-standardized, in order to highlight the difficulties related to place-value, for children from third to fifth grade. However, all sub-tests were not satisfactorily discriminatory after the pre-standardization. We then modified the sub-test in order to correct this lack of discriminatory capacity. Next we standardized the test using a population of 120 children. After standardization, most of the sub-tests were discriminatory enough. This test then allows comparing a child's score to the reference values of his age. Nonetheless, among all sub-tests, one is still not sufficiently discriminatory. Also, adding new modifications could improve this test assessing the notion of place-value.
