Représentation sociale des infections à papillomavirus humain chez les jeunes femmes de 14 à 19 ans‎ : étude qualitative par méthode de groupe focalisé

Abstract : The human papillomavirus infection is the most frequent STD in the world. Some HPVs 16 and 18 are responsible of 70% of cervical cancers. The vaccine, which is the primary prevention method against HPV infections, including the cervical cancer, raises concerns among public opinion. The purpose of this study is to define the social representation of HPV infections among young women and to understand its foundation. This study will allow to identify useful tools in order to improve information which is delivered by GPs to young women on HPV infections. Our qualitative study was performed in Vallée de l'Arve, using six focus groups. Participants have a rather limited knowledge about HPV. The social representation which young women have built on HPV infections is mainly based on the negative images of STD and the vaccine. This vaccine raises much reluctance, mainly due to the lack of objectivity of our society towards its commercialization, its media exposure and the fear of secondary effects. For some participants, this vaccine represents an additional protection. This pretty unflattering image could be improved if GPs were to provide suitable explanations to patients, and even to their relatives. Providing clear and precise information to patients, during a consultation focused on prevention, would all together improve their awareness on HPVs, reduce bad press and change social representation of HPVs. Patients would therefore be more able to make their decision on whether to get vaccinated or not.
