Analyse croisée des besoins éducatifs des patients diabétiques de type 2 hospitalisés du point de vue des patients et des soignants‎ : perspectives pour le développement d'une démarche éducative pendant le temps d'hospitalisation

Abstract : Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is an emblematic chronic disease. Its impact on the health and the necessary implication of patients in its management leaded to therapeutic education approaches. The aim of therapeutic education is that the patient acquire the self-care and coping skills needed to have a better life with its disease and can manage it daily. Different types of management are available: in hospital or outpatient care. Could hospitalization be an education period? What are the educational needs of hospitalized diabetic patients? Method: To target the demands of patients with type 2 diabetes and to analyze the perception of these demands by caregivers, semi-structured individual interviews were realized. Twenty patients hospitalized for uncontrolled diabetes in the diabetology service of the University Hospital of Grenoble and eight caregivers were interviewed. A thematic analysis of verbatim permitted to classify their demands. Results: As a result, there is a difference between needs expressed by patients and caregivers. Whereas patients asked for psychosocial support, development of their self-confidence and strategies to go back home, caregivers relate cognitive needs and development of skills to look after oneself. Conclusion: This work leads to develop a shared educational assessment. We advise caregivers to identify patient profiles and to consider an adapted educational approach during hospitalization. Therapeutic sequences can be proposed like workshops "I come back home unworried with my new drugs."
