L'utilisation de l'homéopathie par les femmes enceintes : enquête descriptive dans une maternité de type III de la région Aquitaine

Abstract : Introduction : Homeopathy is a fully-fledged therapy without having proven its effect but which could represent a possible alternative for the "little pains of pregnancy". The main objective of this study is to carry out a review of the status of the use of homeopathy by pregnant women. The secondary objectives aim to compare some characteristics between those having used homeopathy during pregnancy and the ones who have not, and also to note the presence or not of a patients' profile using this therapy. Pregnant womens' point of view on homeopathy will be also discussed. Material and methods : This descriptive study was carried out from 26/07/2012 to 24/11/2012, thanks to an anonymous questionnaire made available to pregnant women in the last quarter of their pregnancy, having been seen in a grade III maternity ward in the Aquitaine region. Results : 97,1% of pregnant women are aware of homeopathy and 53,3% have used it during pregnancy. There are more to have used it during the first quarter of the pregnancy. The main symptoms mentioned are : nausea/vomiting, tiredness/sleeping disorders and "others" (colds, allergies, perineum preparation...). It is mainly midwives and pharmacists who prescribe or advise homeopathy to pregnant women. These ones would have made this choice because of the absence of risks for the fetus and compatibility with the pregnancy. The pregnant women who used homeopathy during pregnancy are significantly more likely to also resort to therapies other than allopathy and homeopathy. Conclusion : Pregnant women seem to have a rather positive perception of homeopathy, and would mostly be in favour of its use during pregnancy, as well as its use in the departments of maternity.
