Étude des enjeux socio-environnementaux de l'exploitation de charbon de chêne, Quercus spp (encinos), issu des forêts communautaires des alentours de la ville de San Cristobal de las Casas, Los Altos de Chiapas, Mexique

Abstract : The city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in los Altos de Chiapas is an influent regional market for wood charcoal. Lots of households and commerces still depend on this resource for economic and cultural reasons. To face to the demand, productors operate forests farer and farer from the city. Wood charcoal operation is responsible for a cascade of ecological and climatical effects with tempered forests degradation and exhaustion of oaks (Quercus spp.) population. Scientists do worry of this situation but mexican government does not find interest in the oak, contrary to the pine, the major economic specie. Productors are also farmers in precarious situation who find in colliery the only source of additional income to a self-subsistence agriculture. The colliery takes part in an illegal context. It is not profitable to productors, bloked by go-betweens who control the market. Without simplification of the mexican forest law nor productors organization, the nowadays forests and productors situation will hardly progress.
