Représentations des femmes nullipares concernant la contraception par dispositif intra-utérin‎ : analyse qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés

Abstract : INTRODUCTION: Despite an increase in the contraception diffusion, the number of termination of pregnancies is not declining, and additionally, is often a failure of contraception. The Intra-uterine Device is a long acting, first line contraception, which can be used by women whatever their parity is. However, only 1,3% of women aged 15-49 use it in France. Reasons of this low use are complex and involve women's representations about this method of contraception. OBJECTIVE: To explore the nulliparous women's representations about the Intra-uterine Contraceptive Device. METHOD: One to one semi structured interviews were conducted with nulliparous women who never used an IUD and never terminated a pregnancy. Data were subjected to a qualitative study. The sampling was designed to search a maximal variation. The thematic analysis was conducted by triangulation of the searchers. RESULTS: 16 interviews were realized between May and October 2013. The following analytical themes were identified: the IUD is an unthinkable, abstract, invasive contraception, with a lack of personal control in spite of admitted advantages. CONCLUSION: The pejorative representations of the IUD remain dominating for nulliparous women, explaining the low utilization of this contraceptive method. It seems to exist a rigid contraceptive pattern. Thus it is difficult for women to consider individually all contraceptive methods on the same level of interest. This study highlight the importance of a systematic and complete contraceptive counseling including a presentation of the IUD and the diffusion of already existing supports during the contraception's clinic.
