La poétique de l'effritement dans The Inheritance of Loss de Kiran Desai

Abstract : The Inheritance of Loss focuses on a small community living north India in an area shaken by nationalist tensions, in the 1980s. On the other side of the planet, young Biju who left Kalimpong for a better life in New York, copes with a lonesome and miserable life as an immigrant. The narrative depicts the fragility and instability of the characters' daily lives as they are torn between an ambiguous colonial past and the uncertain promises of Globalization. The tone is very pessimistic and conveys an inevitable sense of loss: everything is to crumble and vanish. Yet, the dark message of the novel is undercut by a glimmer of hope, perceptible through the very act of writing, selfknowledge and gatherings. The novel is not only a story of loss; throughout its contradictions, it is an invitation to grasp the future despite the wounds of the past; it embodies the possibility to recover one's humanity when everything has been lost.
