Réécriture de l'histoire australienne : affirmation d'un point de vue aborigène Benang From the Heart de Kim Scott : déconstruction de la version univoque de l'homme blanc, vers une multiplicité de récits

Abstract : This study is concerned with the history of the Australian nation and with the deconstruction of the latter in Kim Scott's Benang from the Heart. In order to understand how and why the writer undertakes this task of reassessing the white monopoly over history, the following analysis offers an insight into the foundations of colonial historiography: encounters between colonisers and colonised, the creation of otherness, the fabrication of the "savage" and the making of the notion of "race" - a concept which was legitimated in the 18th century by whites through colonial exhibitions and scientific theories. Thus positioned, the writing of history was determined by this set of ideological options which had been specific to the Western world since the late 15th century, and offered a unique and unequivocal version of the past: the white man's perspective. By making use of literary postmodern strategies, Kim Scott puts forth a postcolonial vision which gives birth to polyphony, plurality of perspectives and multiple narratives. Through his narrator, a "half-caste" boy, Scott tells on the harmful effects of colonisation on Aboriginal identity. Recounting racism, segregation and genocide, Scott offers a new interpretation of history and attests a possible subversion of the dominant systems of representation embodied by the archives. The aim of this research is to be able to grasp the contemporary situation in Australia and realise the importance of cultural revival and the necessity of finding a way towards self-representation in order to emerge from invisibility.
