Contribution à la gestion d'un oiseau introduit envahissant en Nouvelle-Calédonie, le bulbul à ventre rouge (Pycnonotus cafer L.) : étude des modalités de piégeage et du comportement alimentaire en milieu naturel

Abstract : Invasive exotic species degrade ecosystems and are a threat to biodiversity (case of the invasive birds in this report) (Soubeyran, 2008). As part of a control plan of the red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer L.) in New-Caledonia, studies have been done on trapping methods and on foraging behaviors of the bulbul. The different procedures of trapping involved 2 types of cages, 5 types of fruit-baits (real fruit and fake fruit) and the presence or absence of a live bird as a decoy in the traps. In total, 59 bulbuls were captured in the traps and 118 bulbuls were observed in the wild. Differences between trapping methods were significant. The most effective methods were the banana fruit-baits (46% of the catches) and papaya (35% of the catches), the presence of a decoy in the traps (76% of the catches) and the cage-trap called "camembert" (68% of the catches). In the study of the foraging behavior of the red-vented bulbul, it has been observed feeding on 16 different plant species of which 7 are invasive species. Berries and fruits were their preferred form of sustenance (80% of the observations) and their preferred height was at more than 3 meters (> 75% of the observations). The behaviours most observed were "scanning" (> 50%) and "singing" (20%). The results obtained during these studies have allowed for a certain number of recommendations to be put forwards as to the development of the trapping method and the pursuit of scientific endeavors with the aim of sustainable control of the red-vented bulbul population in New-Caledonia.
