Retour précoce à domicile après l'accouchement : étude prospective à la maternité Port-Royal

Abstract : Early post-natal discharge : a prospective study at the maternity of Port Royal. Today in France, there is a will to shorten the length of hospitalisation to try to limit the health expenses, as the number of births is increasing. One solution would be an earlier postnatal discharge but would require a special coordination between the town and hospital. The new maternity of Port Royal, which was established in February 2012, uses more and more frequently an early postnatal discharge. What are the caracteristics of women who are discharged earlier? How do they feel when they come home and how is the follow-up organized? To answer these questions, a prospectiv study in Port Royal has been done, comparing caracteristics of each patient who has been discharged earlier and those who have been discharged later (n=148). We then evaluated the satisfaction of patients who were discharged earlier thanks to a questionnaire (n=54). There is no "standard profile" of women who are discharged earlier, except a few differences of caracteristics. Overall, women interwiewed are satisfied with an early postnatal discharge and the modality of follow-up. There are however possibilities of improving this practice, especially by giving information before the birth. This information needs to be given by health-care professionals during the pregnancy.
