La Vieille dans la toponymie du Royaume-Uni et de l'Irlande : trace d'un ancien culte voué à la Nature ?

Abstract : The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate the existence of a prehistoric mother goddess called the Old Woman and symbolizing Nature. She has left written and oral traces through time in the languages and in certain myths, legends and customs of Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland. She has also given her name to several hundred British places such as : the Mountain of the Old Woman, the Stone of the Old Woman, the River of the Old Woman and also the Tooth of the Old Woman and the Barrow of the Old Woman. Most of these place-names – or toponyms – are usually found in the British Isles. A multidisciplinary approach – especially a linguistic, ethnologic and archaeologic one – shall help us understand why so many places belong to the Old Woman and for what reasons the peoples of celtic, germanic and romance language gave the name Old Womanto weather phenomena, animals and even plants. We shall see that those specific names, toponymy and megaliths – standing-stones and prehistoric tombs – constitute the remains of a cult directed towards this goddess. Her presence can be seen in specific landscapes assuming human shapes and also shapes of a womanly body : she was considered a mother figure, a great provider and creator, in other words, Mother Earth, also known as the Old Woman.
