Automédication et effets indésirables : étude transversale descriptive auprès de 666 personnes consultant dans le quart Nord-Ouest de l’île de la Réunion entre septembre 2013 et mai 2014

Abstract : Introduction: Self-medication is a practice encouraged by the economic environment and medical demography. Patients are seeking autonomy. However, this behavior is risky. Objective: The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of adverse drug reactions due to self-medication in Reunion. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted by self-administered questionnaires to 666 people consulting in the northwest quarter of the island of Reunion between September 2013 and May 2014. Results: The prevalence of adverse drug reactions due to self-medication was 8%. 60% of respondents have declared a self-medication behavior. The most consumed self-medication drugs were analgesics for 84% and anti-inflammatory drugs for 59%. The patient satisfaction rate about self-medication was 89%. Having received information about the risks to self-medicate significantly increased the behavior’s satisfaction (p=0.014). The main source of drugs for self-medication was issuing pharmacy (63% of cases). Conclusion: While nearly two-thirds of the population are self-medicate, fewer than one in ten persons suffers from adverse effects, mainly resulting from the use of analgesics. Perfect therapeutic alliance between the general practitioner and the pharmacist is a guarantee of success in the promotion of responsible, controlled and secure self-medication. This is all the more necessary that governments tend to liberalize the distribution of self-medication drugs in supermarkets.
