La mort dans la littérature de jeunesse

Abstract : What are the most difficult subjects to discuss with children in primary school? On one hand there is sexuality and on the other hand there is death. While many textbooks provide help to teachers on how to talk of the first subject, it seems difficult to find even a chapter about death and how to reflect on it. Talking of death in a scientific way can be easy, but how to react when a child is suffering because he has just lost someone dear to him? How to answer when he asks something about death? Should we talk about it or wait for a tragic event to happen to launch a discussion on the matter? How can a teacher talk of such a sensitive subject? In this dissertation, I tried to find what role primary school can have in a reflection on death. After studying the point of view of various psychoanalysts on how society look at death and how children perceive it, it occurred to me that one way to start a philosophical discussion on the matter is to use children's books. After several readings, I have selected and analysed four books according to the way each of them talks of death and mourning. One of these albums helped me form a French class sequence aimed at children between the 3rd and 5th year of primary school.
