Les sociétés militaires privées : acteurs controversés de la sécurité internationale

Abstract : The mercenaries are an ancient phenomenon that is reappearing in the last twenty years under the name of Private Military Companies (PMC). The states and other clients have used them and they develop their expertise abroad. That is what differentiates them from the companies that work within the state they are coming from. Anglo-Saxon countries use Private Military Companies as a tool of their foreign policy. On the contrary, France has always refused to turn to the private sector for military services but France’s position is slowly evolving. A study of PMC’s activities, the international legal framework, the relations with the Army and the ethical considerations are some aspects that we will go through along this work.
