Pietas et impietas : pères et fils à Rome à la fin de la République

Abstract : The last century of the Roman Republic was marked by civil wars, driven by power struggles against the major political and military leaders: Marius and Sulla, Pompey and Caesar, Octavian and Mark Antony. Many theorists of the time attributed the decay of Rome, leading to a climate of civil war, the abandonment of the mos maiorum, the custom of the Ancients, which pietas is one of the symbolic values. This virtue is generally defined as the feeling that induces a respectful attitude towards the gods, the home and parents.
A reflection of the father-son relationship, centered around the pietas and impietas may be interesting to understand this period of unprecedented upheaval in the Roman society of the late Republic. It will study how are treated in ancient sources cases of piety and impiety of sons towards their fathers during those years to show that the violence committed against the father are considered as both as the vector and the paradigm ciuil bellum. Then we will see how the philosophical and moral writings of that time reaffirm the absolute primacy of the virtue of filial piety as a fundamental value of the Roman and redefine it as a natural devotion which guarantees order to restore peace. Finally, this work addresses the issue of the political use of the Roman virtue in time of war, to understand how Octavian, the adopted son and heir of Caesar, has used his devotion to his late father to ingratiate opinion and finally win one on the Roman political scene after his victory over Mark Antony at Actium.
