Représentations des personnes âgées de leur sexualité et de leur corps vieillissant : approche phénoménologique et psycho-dynamique

Abstract : Context: The sexuality of the elderly is rarely mentioned in general medicine although it holds an important place in many old people’s life. According to the World Health Organisation, the sexual well-being is part of the global well-being. To understand the representations that the elderly have of their own sexuality is the main objective of this study. Method: Qualitative study through partially guided conversations with 15 patients aged more than 65. After data saturation, triangulation of a phenomenological and psycho-dynamical analysis of the verbatim integrally transcribed. Results: Some patients keep a view of their sexuality as in accordance with the societal standards existing before May 68. For them, sexuality is taboo and linked to procreation. Sexuality is no longer part of an ageing body, the latter being perceived as degraded. The dialogue between the GP and the patient is difficult as defence mechanisms are activated.Other patients have managed to free themselves from those earlier societal standards. The notion of pleasure is still present and the ageing body is perceived as an altered body. To accept this altered body is not always simple notably on account of a pressure for conformity due to actual societal standards that reserve sexuality to young people and convey a picture of a sexuality that would be improper for the elderly. The dialogue with these patients is not obvious but is still possible. Conclusion:To understand the representations that the elderly have of their sexuality allows the GP to enter into a better dialogue. His role then would be to help patients to overcome societal standards about sexuality and to revive their ageing body.
