Erreurs médicamenteuses chez les personnes de plus de 60 ans en institution : données du Centre Antipoison et de ToxicoVigilance de Bordeaux en 2014 et prévention

Abstract : Drugs and medications are an important component of healthcare, especially for the elderly residing in nursing care facilities (in French, EHPAD, Établissement d’hébergement pour personnes âgées dépendantes). Optimal usage of medicines requires a high standard of professional competency in order to avoid and prevent adverse effects. The objective of this thesis is to create a categorical inventory of these adverse effects and their relation to the different steps of drug distribution and administration. We will also address how errors and adverse effects are consequently managed. We will analyze and discuss data collected from the Bordeaux Poison Control during 2014. Studies show that treatment errors too often result from lack of time, personnel and finances. The management of adverse effects is twofold: a priori by strict quality control, and a posteriori by motivated health care professionals who regularly verify proper drug administration. Continual education and formation of professionals is of course also essential. The role of the pharmacist in preventing errors of drug usage must not be overlooked. Thus, the pharmacist plays a crucial role in assuring safe drug usage by raising awareness of medication induced adverse effects.
