L'évolution des personnages féminins dans le théâtre de Tennessee Williams

Abstract : Tennessee Williams is one of the most famous and talented writers of the 20th century ; he is one of the great American playwrights. His most celebrated works (and those less well-known) feature female characters at a time when women were under-represented in the literary world (and in other domains too). His women are complex, sympathetic and moving. He wrote during a very special time in American history : the plays chosen were written between 1944 and 1979 which is considered to be a time of great social upheaval, especially in relation to women’s rights. With the five plays chosen (amongst which are A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie) we shall see how these female characters evolve and the impact that the American social revolution had on these women and on Williams’ writing.
