État des connaissances parentales sur la rougeole et sa vaccination

Abstract : Background and Objectives: Measles is a potentially serious disease. Vaccination is the only effective prevention, but its coverage is still insufficient in France. We tried to assess the state of knowledge of parents on measles and its vaccination, to know their main sources of information and identify the elements related to the vaccine decision. Method: our descriptive quantitative study interviewed parents of children from 1 to 17, by a questionnaire distributed on the Internet and in general practitioners offices. Results: In total, 222 questionnaires were analyzed. Measles and its vaccine were well known but its potential severity and the interests of its vaccination were misunderstood. A low level of knowledge was not related to a lower vaccination. The general practitioner was the main source of information. Parents whose children were all vaccinated (84.7%) were confident about current vaccines and careful to observe the immunization schedule (p<0.05). Unwilling parents (7.7%) had doubts about the safety of vaccines, were not sensitive to vaccination campaigns and more often consulted a physician practicing an alternative medicine (p<0.05).Conclusion: Parents seem globally in favor of vaccination, but it is necessary to improve the information provided about the severity of measles and the interest and safety of its vaccine. The general practitioner has an important role for the parents’ education and the promotion of vaccination.
