« On ne discute pas les goûts…» : transformer les représentations sociales des élèves sur les goûts et les pratiques culturels

Abstract : Our dissertation deals with the importance of taking into account social representations of students in social sciences classes. Our topic focuses on 10th grade students’ representations of cultural taste and cultural practices. Our aim was to analyze the process of deconstruction and reconstruction in order to transform those representations. More precisely, in order to achieve this goal, our main hypothesis is that the teaching process needs to root itself in the social experience known from students. We elaborated quantitative indicators enabling us to measure the initial structure of students’ representations, and their evolution at the end of the process. We set up a lesson plan that involved students in group work, analyzing documentary resources then presenting and discussing their conclusions in order to confirm or infirm previously chosen hypotheses. After the lesson, we see an evolution of students’ representations, thus confirming our main hypothesis. We finally draw on different effects of this lesson, and discuss various teaching methods to engage in deconstructing representations.
