Enseigner l’aspect culturel de l’anglais pour lutter contre les stéréotypes

Abstract : As a Primary School teacher, I am interested in the cultural aspect of English and I wonder how to teach the cultural aspect of a foreign language? First of all, I analyzed two English texts books to observe how the culture is presented and joined in linguistic aspect. Then, I placed my pupils at the center of my approach by taking an interest of their own views. For this purpose, I collected their representations through the use of questionnaires. I am coming at this from the point of view that each individual constructs himself, very early, a system of knowledge and faiths and I wanted to know if some stereotypes are already in their minds. Moreover, I wanted to understand where all their conceptions come from. I then observed a variety of wrong conceptions and “developing stereotypes”. This observation confirmed the importance and the need to teach the cultural aspect of a foreign language effectively. Finally, my study allowed bringing to light some guidelines to adhere to during the introduction of learning sequences. These guidelines aim to carrying out my goals which are: to develop the knowledge of my pupils, their reflexive attitudes, their communicative skills and some values combating stereotypes such as their open-minded, their tolerance and their respect.
