Les politiques de mobilité au service de la redynamisation commerciale des nouvelles centralités urbaines

Abstract : This essay is about the revitalization of commercial activities in urban centralities through politics of mobility. Many studies about the impact of pedestrian area and transportation infrastructures on commerce appeared since the 1970s -1980s. These studies focus on the effect of one variable upon another, sometimes putting aside the urban, social and economic context in which change is operating. Within those studies, smaller central areas are often pushed into the background, while city-center assumes greater significance. This essay rises the following question: Can mobility stimulate commercial activities of new urban district centralities? In order to answer this question, the first part defines commerce, mobility and centralities concepts, tracing their evolution across time. Then, it browses exemples of recent politics of mobility experiments in several european cities and their influence on the areas in which they occured. Finally, the last part suggests some answers with the example of "la place des Pradettes" of Toulouse.
