Impliquer les élèves dans des discussions à visée philosophique

Abstract : This report deals with philosophical discussions in primary school. This teaching allows pupils to develop linguistic skills, to begin to act in citizen, and to think rationally. In practice, pupils have to propose a philosophical question using a medium given by the teacher, and then to discuss it together. This study was conducted with pupils in 2nd year of primary school, and tried to find practical aspects that can enlarge pupil’s involvement in the activity. We tested three variables: the medium type, the doing of a question’s personal preparation and the doing of an individual discussion’s written summary. Their influence on the pupils’ involvement was estimated by counting the average number of questions proposed by pupils for every medium type, and for the two other variables, by analyzing pupils’ participation and agitation during the discussion. The results revealed that pupils proposed more questions when the support is a text than when it’s a picture. For both of the two other variables, the results were not valid. To conclude, allowing every pupil to find its place in this activity is a difficult and unfinished challenge, that’s why other practical aspects will be tested soon.
