La Russie perçue par Louis-Philippe de Ségur (fin XVIIIe siècle)

Abstract : This master thesis is about the view of Louis Philippe de Ségur, plenipotentiary secretary, of Russia in the eighteenth century. This work is therefore based on the memories of this young noble in which he describes his five years living in this country. This latter was anyway in the center of a large numbers of preoccupations in this century, considered one of the Enlightenment. The great philosophers of that time: Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, vowed a real admiration to this Empire of the East led by a woman: Catherine the Second. They saw it as an example for other sovereigns because she was interested in their writings and tried to lead her country with these enlightened ideas. The Muscovite Empire was also widely studied in the writings of this century either for its huge territory, its diversifying population, or its brutal and violent customs. Through this work, we look at the view of Ségur trying to analyze the differences and similarities between his feelings and those of the great thinkers of his time. For that, in the first place, we focus to understand the context of the writing's memories, after that we'll then discuss about the Empire's territories, and then to its sovereign and her government before finally to study the populations living on this immense territory. This study leads us to ask ourselves how and why we perceive this country during the Enlightenment when he was considered an Empire "absolutist" led by a stranger to Western ideas more than Asian. The Ségur’s view take place in a duality of representations of Russia, showing us a land composed with territories, customs, different populations, but also a country evolving, emerging from the darkness under the impulse of an open-minded Tsarina on Europe, continuing the work of Peter the Great.
