Enseigner les mathématiques en anglais : la DNL comme source de motivation et de progrès en langue étrangère

Abstract : Non-Linguistic Disciplines (NLD) have existed in France since 1992 and aim at allowing learners to increase their knowledge about a subject while improving their skills in the selected foreign language. This study offers to observe the actual effects of the NLD on English classes. To that end, it first presents the teaching environment before dealing with the objectives, benefits and mechanisms of NLD lessons. Finally, it analyses the proceedings and the results of an experiment of mathematics lessons in English conducted with a small group of Year 11 students. Far from including every single aspects of NLDs, this paper essentially focuses on the students' progress in terms of oral expression and comprehension as well as the evolution of their motivation following the mathematics in English classes.
