Insuffisance des dons de lait sur Bordeaux : comprendre les causes

Abstract : Objective: Some studies have revealed that nowadays, while breast milk is not available for some children, the use of breast milk from donors take precedence over artificial milk. Yet, the access to the donors’ breast milk is limited due to the lack of donation. What is at stake here, is to understand why the breast milk’s donations are insufficient, especially near Bordeaux, located in Gironde. Methods: A quantitative study, based on an observational analytical-type approach (etiological point of view) was carried out near Bordeaux in several centres. 157 questionnaires were distributed to women – by their self-employed midwives – who had given birth 1 to 6 months ago and had breastfed their infant for at least two weeks. These questionnaires were analysed. Results: We can notice three different kinds of answers: the lack of information, the difficulties linked to the donation (breast pump, time shortage, etc.) and drawbacks due to the donation itself (breastfeeding as too intimate). Conclusion: This study has shown that there is a lack of information about breast milk donations. More information could allow couples to take a stand in an unbiased position about those donations.
