Profil médico-social des patients ayant consulté au centre d’addictologie de Mayotte en 2015 pour usage de nouveaux produits de synthèse, une étude rétrospective

Abstract : Introduction. Since 2012, new psychoactive substances, mainly synthetic cannabinoids, can be found on Mayotte Island. Their consumption as cigarettes, sometimes combined with plants (such as Tephrosia vogelii) rapidly spread throughout this French island located in the Indian Ocean where lives a young population with a low standard of living, culturally not user of toxic substances, and unaware of risks they entail. Method: This retrospective and descriptive study has gathered medico-social characteristics of all the patients whom consulted in 2015 the Mayotte health care center specialized in addictions for regular and problematic use of new psychoactive substances, in order to establish a profile of those users. Results: Among the 54 patients included, the median age was 20 years old, 89% of those were men, 48% had a criminal record, 87% said they were cannabis users, active or withdrawn. Their living conditions were similar to those of the Mayotte's population. At least 76% of the patients had an addiction to the substance. The existence of a psychiatric history was a risk factor in stopping the monitoring early. Conclusion: An early detection of subjects within a risk group is necessary considering the fact those substances are highly addictive. Actions of prevention widened to the entire population must be done to raise awareness about the risks of consumption of toxic substances globally.
