L’influence du contexte de la tâche sur la peur ressentie par les élèves et leurs résultats scolaires

Abstract : Evaluation situations are often anxiety-provoking for pupils. However, the fear of evaluation affects student’s attention and consequently affects the results of these ones. The importance of academic success on our society, due to the perception of intelligence, impact the error’s perception and place, which is partly responsible for this fear. This way, we have tried to show that change the context of an exercise influences the fear felt by pupils and their results. For this, we have conducted a project in six classes of cycle 3. We have proposed to pupils mathematical problems in two different conditions: an evaluation condition and a training condition. We have observed their preferences for the difficulty of the exercises and their performances according to their perception of their capacities and level. After analyzing the results, the only significant effect noted is the one of the interaction between our experimental condition and the perception of capacities. Moreover, we get results in agreement with the idea that thinking the intelligence as capable of evolving allows to have less fear of making mistakes and therefore daring to make mistakes in order to learn.
