Un élément paysager comme marqueur et vecteur d'identité territoriale : exemple du Rhin, frontière ou lien dans la région trinationale de Bâle (CH)

Abstract : Thesedays, rivers act as factor of cultural boundaries as well as a venue of the local residents. Under this model, the Rhine within this trinational region can be identified as a physical and political barrier between the three countries Germany, France and Switzerland. At the same time, the Rhine is one of the largest thoroughfares in the world which connects a part of Europe and brings people together due to his history. One can even talk of a Rhine culture. Both roles of the Rhine raise the question: can it be identifies as a boarder or a connection of the three countries? A theoretical approach initially presents the Rhine in its ambivalence: yesterday a local and shared river, but presented as a border; today a European river as “symbol of cooperation”, but whose access are partially blocked due industries. A qualitative study confronts later these ideas through the opinions of the inhabitants of the trinational region. This new approach attempts to apply a new method, inspired by the memory cards. The final map allows showing the relationships between the Rhine and locals, a relationships exclusively focused on leisure and the ability to cross the river.
