Les sages-femmes et la démarche éducative

Abstract : Introduction - In 2010, the National Institution for Prevention and Health Education (Institut national de prévention et d’éducation pour la santé, Inpes) published a report entitled “Pregnancy and Welcoming a Child” («Grossesse et accueil de l’enfant»), which provided health professionals with a tool to provide health information and education. Objective - To evaluate the educative approach of midwives in antenatal consultations and to compare them to Inpes’s educative program. Methods - Observing antenatal consultations carried out by midwives and recording this Information in a table based on the one proposed by Inpes. Results - 61 antenatal consultations carried out by ten different midwives were observed: Four midwives were hospital midwives that work in type II and III maternity hospitals, two worked in private practice and two worked for the Maternal and Infant Protection Service. All the midwives were involved in providing health information but only partial so. Discussion - The reinforcement of patients’ competences and resources is often insufficient. The road to improving the provision of perinatal health information lies in the development of a system of accompaniment and support.
