Pratiques et conceptions de la notion « évaluation de l'information » : pistes pour une didactisation

Abstract : Evaluating information resources, a complex operation depending on the user’s purposes and prior knowledge, is an important step in any research activity. The World Wide Web has surpassed most libraries in the quantity of information it makes available. The amount of information available from all sources and online is increasing rapidly. Therefore, learners must be able to critically evaluate the appropriateness, the reliability and the quality of all types of information sources before using it. However, the lack of time granted for the notion “evaluating information” in curriculums is a major hindrance in mastering the notion since very few learners are in a position to explain it. The analysis of 195 secondary school learners' erroneous pictures allowed us to highlight the difficulties they are confronted with. To achieve this, we have collected data thanks to a field study consisting of a survey completed by nine secondary level classes. Once those difficulties in the understanding of the notion of “evaluating the information” were clearly identified, we were able to build teaching strategies supported by the theoretical contributions in the field of Information and Communication Sciences and in Information and documentation curriculum.
