Prise médicamenteuse et de compléments alimentaires chez l’ultra-trailer compétiteur, à propos du Grand Raid 2015 (Ile de la Réunion)

Abstract : The ultra-trail is an athletic activity that has been booming in the past few years. Ultra-trail athletes epidemiological data about medicines and dietary supplements consumption hasn't been studied much. Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study with self-submitted anonymous survey handed out directly to participants at one of the 3 Grand Raid 2015 races at the same time as their number and returned on the same day. Results: Out of 1691 answers received, 21.23 % of the athletes used medication in their preparation phase and 31.64 % during the race. Most of the drugs used were painkillers but the share of NSAID, of 5 % in preparation and 20.97% during the race, is not an epiphenomenon. During the preparation self- medication is responsible for 58.69 % of the cases and 68.34 % during the race. Amongst the ultra- trailers that answered the survey, 67.76 % carry drugs with them during the race, especially painkillers and NSAID. Note that 51.74 % take dietary supplements, however only 4.11 % are prescribed. Finally, 7 % follow a long-term treatment. 73.4 % of patients inform their general practitioner that they are involved in high performance sport. Conclusion: Often through self-medication, ultra-trailers consume dietary supplements and drugs, of which a considerable portion is NSAID. Frequently informed of the sporting activity of his patients the general practitioner is the best actor to work on risk prevention linked to this consumption in the scope of ultra-trail.
