La fête de Pourim dans la communauté juive de Bayonne : étude d'une célébration rituelle et festive

Abstract : The Jewish festival of Purim is a joyful commemoration of the events in the Book of Esther – a miraculous story of deliverance, which takes place in the ancient Persian empire, in which Queen Esther saves the Jewish people from extermination. Sometimes knowns as “The Jewish Carnival”, Purim is characterized by a number of festive and ritual practises. This study proposes a historical, sociological, and anthropological look at the organisation and celebration of Purim, as it was observed in 2016 by the Jewish community of Bayonne, France. It also examines the question of how this type of religious intangible heritage is viewed in France, and whether or not it is effectively incorporated into cultural programming.
