Des légumes et des hommes. Pour une histoire des jardins potagers à Grenoble au 18e siècle

Abstract : Artichoke, carrot, peas, melon... During the eighteenth century, the list of vegetable seeds is quite extensive. From small simple gardens to more luxurious and noble ones, and all the way to the cities, vegetable patches fulfill all of society's demands. Present among all social classes, these gardens appear as rich nurseries of historical studies.This essay is about Grenoble vegetable gardens from the Enlightenment. Its goal is to find out, by exploring various issues, if it is possible to study these gardens within the city. Furthermore, this essay provides data regarding the location of gardens in the mesh of urban areas, the seed vendors, the vegetables that were grown and informations on some gardeners. The position of vegetable gardens is here studied "from seed to plate", at the crossroads of a social, cultural and technical history.
