Ressenti des patients diabétiques type 2 ayant participé à un programme d’éducation thérapeutique au sein d’une maison de santé pluri-professionnelle

Abstract : Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease that requires not only pharmacological but also behavioral and psychological care. Therapeutic patient education (TPE) has been introduced over the last few years to optimize this type of care. The aim of this study is to describe the experience of patients whohave gone through such a program. Methodology: Qualitative study consisting of semi-structured interviews of type 2 diabetic patients who participated in a TPE program between 2011 and 2015 in a multidisciplinary health center in the city of Gap, France. Results: 21 interviews were carried out between January and September 2016. We analyzed them, leading us to a classification of TPE’s fields of action into three categories and nine themes. The first category includes the management of diabetes through an accurate diet, physical activity, complications, and empowerment. In our second category we deal with the psychosocial aspects, taking into account the personal experience with regards to the disease and its acceptance. Third, we analyze the interactions between the actors of TPE and the relatives, the group, and the health care providers. Conclusion: TPE seems to play a role at different levels, from the simple transmission of information to helping with the acceptance of the disease, and the exchange of good practices between patients. To a great extent, the participants' experiences are very positive and highlight the interest for this approach as a supplement to the usual treatments.
