Freins au développement des groupes d’échange et d’analyse des pratiques (GEAP) en Gironde

Abstract : The Peer-Review groups are a Continuing Medical Education (CME) method that appears to be user-friendly, motivating and well adapted to general practice. Yet these groups are not very widespread in Gironde. This work’s aim was to understand the impediments which limit the development of these groups in Gironde. Secondary objectives were to identify doctors' knowledge about peer review groups and to investigate what constituted positive aspects for them. A qualitative method with three focus groups was used. The first group was constituted by seven general practitioners, the second group comprised seven general practitioners who were already members of a peer review group and the last group was constituted by four medical interns. The three main obstacles to the development of peer review group, which were reflected in the discussions, were the time invested, the difficulties of creating a group and the fear of repeat and tiredness. We were also able to identify lack of knowledge as one of the factors limiting the development of these groups. On the other hand, there was a positive image of these groups as CME. Indeed, according to the doctors interviewed, they allowed knowledge’s update and approached multiple subjects. Many positive points were also cited: the adequacy with general practice, the interactivity and the exchanges existing in a peer review group, the equality between peers and the lack of judgment found in these groups. Facilitate the creation of peer review groups and the widespread use of this groups during initial education could improve their development. This has already started because, since 2017, third cycle teaching in general medicine at Bordeaux’s University will take place in the form of peer review groups. We can only hope that this method being integrated during university, the development of peer review group will increase as CME for general practitioners.
