L'abord de l'estime de soi lors de l'accompagnement thérapeutique des patients diabétiques de type 2 : étude qualitative auprès des patients

Abstract : Context: Therapeutic support of patients suffering diabetes mellitus type 2 has to be considered with biological, psychological and social aspects. Patients and caregivers take it into consideration at the same time to reach some health behavior changes respecting life pleasure. Considering each patient in all his singularity becomes then, a prerequisite in care relationships for which self-esteem, an essential component of our identity, could have a special place. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze if the self-esteem consideration of diabetic type 2 patients during their monitoring consultations, with the different health professionals, was modifying their experience of the therapeutic support. Method: We realized a qualitative study inspired by phenomenology, with adult patients suffering diabetes mellitus type 2. Results: The ten interviewed persons gave us different answers from what we expected. Patients didn’t want to discuss directly the self-esteem subject with the caregivers and its repercussion on the Therapeutic support of their diabetes was, according to them, nonexistent. However, patients raised others concepts, deeply linked to the self-esteem, such as resources for identifying & mobilizing their own skills: self-consideration and relationship to others. Knowing themselves better with the process of individualizing and accepting their own forces & lacks allowed patients to get confidence in their abilities. Specific skills of each of them had to be reinforced & valorized by family, friends & caregivers. Thus, supporters, friendly and sentimental meetings, the fact of being part of a group are factors that contributed to change relationship to others & allowed, by sharing life moments, to help the patient in the initiation and maintenance of changes in health behaviors.
