Évaluation de la connaissance des femmes de 25 à 43 ans au sujet de leur propre fertilité

Abstract : Background: reproductive physiology is taught in middle school. Understanding fertility and recognizing features of their own menstrual cycle is useful to women for the treatment of subfertility, birth control and the management of pelvic pain or bleeding. What knowledge do women really have? Are there predictive factors of the level of knowledge? Do women want to obtain some information? Method: quantitative cross-sectional study in a health center in Montesson (78) and a pediatric ward in Pontoise (95) between December 2015 and January 2016 among women aged 25 to 43 using a questionnaire and calculating the percentage of correct answers. A score was established to identify potential predictive factors of the level of knowledge. Results: 155 questionnaires were analyzed. The anatomy score was 6/10. 45 women (29%) have made the fertile period starts before ovulation. 34 women (22%) knew the role of cervical mucus. 46 women (30%) gave age as a reason decreasing fertility. More than 114 women (74%) wished to talk about fertility with their gynecologist. The comparison between the 1st and 4th quartile yielded the following factors: the location (p = 0.7), age (p = 0.2), nulliparity (p = 0.3), the level of education (p <0.001), sexual activity (p = 1) and use of contraception (p = 0.1) as responsible for the range of responses across surveyed population. 78 women (50%) felt they had good knowledge. Conclusions: despite what they thought, women's knowledge was poor especially when they had a low level of education. But they were interested in the subject. Thus it is the role of the physician to reintroduce the basics of fertility to his patients.
