L'ostéopathie comme ressource en maïeutique : comment s'y réfèrent les sages-femmes ?

Abstract : Objective: Pregnancy is a period of great physical and psychological upheaval, often accompanied by inconveniences related to all these changes. The treatment of these ills can be complex because of the many contra-indicated drugs for use during pregnancy. The rise of unconventional therapies, especially osteopathy, a manual technique for relieving functional disorders during and outside of pregnancy, can provide a non-drug solution. We wanted to study the collaboration of midwives with osteopaths: orientation period and indications, as well as the presence of factors that can influence osteopathic midwifery practices for each period of the pregnancy project.
Methods: We carried out a multi-centric descriptive study using a questionnaire to liberal midwives working in the Yvelines and hospital midwives of the MYPA network. The study was conducted between November 2016 and March 2017.
Results and conclusion: Of the 108 midwives who responded, 105 (97.2%) referred during pregnancy, 106 (98.1%) reported referral to their postpartum patients for consultation with an osteopath. The main indications cited by midwives are musculoskeletal disorders. During the preconception period, 32 midwives (29.6%) offer a consultation with an osteopath, especially for conception difficulties and infertility. We found no significant relationship with the orientation of pregnant and postpartum women in the practice of midwives. The presence at a workshop on osteopathy and having met an osteopath around his place of work are the only factors to have a significant influence on the orientation of the patients in preconception period.
