Mécanismes et adaptations psychologiques lors des transitions non-normatives dans la carrière des sportifs de haut niveau

Abstract : The achievement of sporting excellence and the demanded level of high-performance sport require the athletes to be extremely committed The achievement of sporting excellence and the demanded level of high-performance sport require the athletes to be extremely committed throughout their sports careers. The uncertainty related to sports implies that some events cannot be anticipated, for instance, whether or not the athlete has been selected to take part in the Olympic Games or to join the first-team. Other events such as a wound, a change of club or a new trainer can lead to a change in the athlete’s life course. The main goal of this work is to contribute to the development of expertise’s understanding using an environmental approach, especially towards these unanticipated events also known as non-normative life events. In order to ensure this, we organized semi-structured biographical interviews in qualitative research with 4 athletes. We also carried out a self-confrontation interview within the theoretical framework of the situated action approach. This study highlights the difficulties that athletes may be facing throughout their life courses, according to a multiple-layer development model (sporting, individual, psychosocial, academic and professional). It focuses as well on the mechanisms and the psychological adjustments that are necessary to face the pitfalls and the difficulties related to high-performance sport during non-normative life events.
