Mobiliser l’esprit critique en cours de langue. L’usage du débat

Abstract : How do we develop critical thinking in a foreign language class? The cultural dimension plays a major role in learning a new language and this implies that students can reason, get informed and express developed ideas in this language. We are more and more encouraged to develop critical thinking in our classes and debating activities are often presented as the main type of activity that can help students to develop critical skills. This work was based on experiments conducted in two classes of “2ndes” and on the students’ reactions to the debates organised in class. The main goal of this work was to assess the various and mutual benefits of critical thinking and learning a foreign language. Debating activities were analysed more closely in order to find which conditions are necessary for this exercise to be relevant in the development of critical skills and language skills. It is shown that preparing the debate is the most important step in the development of critical skills.
